Parenteral Nutrition
The global parenteral nutrition market gains in importance as our population is ageing and cases of chronic diseases are incrementing.

Definition of parenteral nutrition
Parenteral nutrition is the intravenous administration of nutrition for patients who are not able to eat orally. The form of nutrition bypasses the normal digestion in the gastrointestinal tract. In fact, the nutrition types include carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, minerals and electrolytes, as well as vitamins and other trace elements. Parenteral nutrition is crucial for the diseased, since it helps to maintain high energy, hydration and a good nutrition status.
The main recipients of parenteral nutrition
In fact, parenteral nutrition affects all age groups of our population. Both adults and children might require and are able to receive this form of intravenous nutrition.
Segmentation of the parenteral nutrition market
In 2020 the size of the parenteral nutrition market was valued at over USD 5.3 billion. The anticipated growth rate is predicted at 7.4 % between 2021 and 2027. The higher demand for parenteral nutrition products is mainly attributed to the increasing elderly population and the globally rising rate of pre-mature births.
The market can be divided by the following segments:
- Nutrient type: carbohydrates, lipid emulsions, single dose amino acid solutions, trace elements, vitamins and minerals
- Consumer type: newborns, children, adults
- End-user: clinics, hospitals, nursing homes
- Geographic areas: The United States, Canada, Mexico; Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom as the most important European countries; in Asia Turkey, Russia, Japan, China, India and South Korea; Brazil and Argentina in South America, South Africa as leading country in Africa; Lastly, Saudi Arabia in the Middle East.

The role of glass packaging for parenteral nutrition
Glass is the ideal packaging material for pharmaceutical products. The main advantages are:
- Resistance against extreme temperature
- Protection from moisture and humidity
- Protection from particles and microbiological contaminations
- Inert material
Furthermore, amber glass offers protection from UV rays, whereas flint glass enables a visual inspection of the medicine.
EcoSecur type 2 glass
Stoelzle Pharma has created a resource-efficient and innovative process for the inner-surface treatment of type 2 glass containers. This modern technique allows precise and reliable dosing tailored to each bottle size, from the smallest 6 ml injection vials to much bigger injection and infusion vials, which is highly important for the use of medication. The main advantages of EcoSecur type 2 glass are:
- Process stability
- Consistent high product quality
- Superior glass quality
- Minimized environmental impact
- Improved hydrolytic resistance
- Exact dosing
- Excellent inspectability
- High performance on filling lines
- Safety for patients
- Exalted level of work safety in production
As a matter of fact, Stoelzle Pharma offers a broad range of injection and infusion vials in amber and flint colour produced according to ‘Good Manufacturing Practices GMP’ (ISO 15378) and fully adherent to European and US Pharmacopeia.
What is the difference between type 2 and type 3 glass packaging containers?
Type 2 containers are moulded containers made out of soda-lime glass with a special inner surface treatment. Due to this, type 2 containers have a high hydrolytic resistance. By contrast, type 3 glass containers are usually made of soda-lime-silica glass with only moderate hydrolytic resistance. Hence, the former are suitable for storing neutral aqueous preparations and acidic preparations, whether they are parenteral or non-parenteral.
A reduced environmental impact with EcoSecur type 2 glass
Adhering to Stoelzle’s sustainability goals, the EcoSecur process guarantees an exalted level of work safety in production and ensures minimum impact on the environment. In fact, a reduced environmental impact is achieved through precise and optimal dosage of ammonium sulfate. The credo is: as much as necessary, as little as possible!
