Parenteral Nutrition

The global parenteral nutrition market gains in importance as our population is ageing and cases of chronic diseases are incrementing.

Definition of parenteral nutrition

Parenteral nutrition is the intravenous administration of nutrition for patients who are not able to eat orally. The form of nutrition bypasses the normal digestion in the gastrointestinal tract. In fact, the nutrition types include carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, minerals and electrolytes, as well as vitamins and other trace elements. Parenteral nutrition is crucial for the diseased, since it helps to maintain high energy, hydration and a good nutrition status.

The main recipients of parenteral nutrition

In fact, parenteral nutrition affects all age groups of our population. Both adults and children might require and are able to receive this form of intravenous nutrition.

In 2020 the size of the parenteral nutrition market was valued at over USD 5.3 billion. The anticipated growth rate is predicted at 7.4 % between 2021 and 2027. The higher demand for parenteral nutrition products is mainly attributed to the increasing elderly population and the globally rising rate of pre-mature births.

The market can be divided by the following segments:

The role of glass packaging for parenteral nutrition

Glass is the ideal packaging material for pharmaceutical products. The main advantages are:

  • Resistance against extreme temperature
  • Protection from moisture and humidity
  • Protection from particles and microbiological contaminations
  • Inert material

Furthermore, amber glass offers protection from UV rays, whereas flint glass enables a visual inspection of the medicine.

As a matter of fact, Stoelzle Pharma offers a broad range of injection and infusion vials in amber and flint colour produced according to ‘Good Manufacturing Practices GMP’ (ISO 15378) and fully adherent to European and US Pharmacopeia.

What is the difference between type 2 and type 3 glass packaging containers?

Type 2 containers are moulded containers made out of soda-lime glass with a special inner surface treatment. Due to this, type 2 containers have a high hydrolytic resistance. By contrast, type 3 glass containers are usually made of soda-lime-silica glass with only moderate hydrolytic resistance. Hence, the former are suitable for storing neutral aqueous preparations and acidic preparations, whether they are parenteral or non-parenteral.
